If we had to guess, plantation shutters have probably survived more decorating trends than just about anything else in a house.
We’ve watched paint colors come and go. We’ve seen entire kitchens remodeled, and then remodeled again, to keep up with the latest look. We’ve seen styles that felt like they’d be around forever disappear almost overnight. And through all of it, homeowners keep coming back to plantation shutters.
Honestly, we’re not surprised.
There are more window treatment options available today than ever before. Motorized shades, smart home integration, room-darkening blinds and all kinds of custom solutions. We love that stuff. It’s fun to see how the industry keeps evolving.
But plantation shutters are one of those products that have never really needed reinventing. Part of that is because they look good in almost any home—traditional homes, modern homes, farmhouses, new construction, older homes. Somehow, they just work.
But if we’re being honest, we don’t think that’s the main reason people love them. What homeowners usually end up talking about is how practical they are. They give you privacy without making a room feel dark. They let you control natural light throughout the day. They’re easy to maintain. They’re durable. And unlike some home trends, they don’t leave people wondering what they were thinking five years later. (We’re all guilty of a decorating decision or two we’d rather not talk about.)
We also hear something else pretty often after a shutter installation. The room feels finished.
It’s hard to explain until you see it. A space can already be beautiful, but shutters have a way of pulling everything together. They add structure and character, and make a room feel intentional. That’s probably why they’ve stuck around for so long.
When homeowners ask us about window treatments, we’ll always walk through all the options and help them find what fits their home best. Sometimes that’s shutters. Sometimes it’s shades. Sometimes it’s a combination of both. But if someone asks us which window treatment has stood the test of time, plantation shutters are always near the top of the list.
Some trends come and go, and we’ve seen plenty over the years. But plantation shutters are one that never seems to go out of style.
